Stunning…. Well ahead of its’ TIME!!!! And upon the second viewing, it was quietly and profoundly moving, very moving. LOVE truly was there, despite prison. A prison not only of walls, but of the mind, feelings, and romantic DESTINY. Society is a prison!!!! Both then (1950), and now and there is still a very long ways to go. It is quite sad that Jean Genet would later denounce this film. His eternally “present” masterwork bludgeoned by both time and himself, but still and nonetheless UNBOWED. Again, it is a superb and stunning film. BRAVO! Review by Anon

Love this….find it incredibly erotic and emotionally and sexually charged …..sometimes i think the gay world has actually gone backwards not forwards….this movie is 71 years old yet it has all the elements of why men with men is so right and so primal and horny….the more mature prisoner is completely masculine and absolutely stunning …the suggestive way that their lust and love is portrayed is more powerful because it taps into our own imagination…..incredibly horny art !! 1. I have the book (French) and have several very erotic chapters! There is an English translation, too.

    1. Probably the best and most beautiful gay film I’ve ever seen! So much more sensual than porn films. This burns deeper into the heart, and a man’s need and burning desire to be intimate with another man! It truly was a beautiful and erotic work of art! Thank you for sharing!

  2. I thought it was a pretty good flick. With no dialogue and the fever pitch, it was very obvious what the older prisoner wanted. If it meant being in a jail cell next to him, I would have done anything he wanted to have just a glimpse of him!

  3. .

I was Blessed to have seen this as a teenager. It had a profound effect on me. It set me on fire, sexually. Forty years latter I still have to watch the entire 26 minutes of Jean Genet’s Art at the very least, once a month. It doesn’t just inspire me, it inspires my cock…

  4. I loved it. A throwback to silent acting techniques where gesture and facial expression were the author’s erotic language, amazing cast and cinematography.

  5. I enjoyed the film and all the actors. I’m glad the officer’s attempt at coercion wasn’t more extensively featured. I would have hated to see that one of the actors had to force another to provide intimate sexual contact. When I see films, period films, and enjoy the actors art, I’m always saddened by the thought that the people I’m admiring are probably dead (no longer with us). At least they live on in film for posterity. How stupid that so many courts in California thought the film pornographic, when it hardly depicted human interaction at all…
